Go the Extra Mile - Products and Infrastructure

As you research the various products and technologies, look up words you’re unfamiliar with in the glossary of water terminology by Lenntech.

Install more efficient water fixtures
According to Discovery.com, switching to low-flow showerheads, faucets, and toilets can nearly cut your water bill in half.

In addition to installing brand-new waterless urinals and efficient washing machines, you can make some easy retrofits to existing systems in order to conserve. For example, putting aerators on faucets or showerheads can greatly reduce overall consumption.

What to look for when buying new water fixtures
When you can, buy products with the EPA’s WaterSense label. The WaterSense label is only on certain types of water products right now, but will probably expand in the near future to include other products. This website lays out the most up-to-date list of WaterSense products by category. Also, consider the water factor on products. H2ouse recommends replacing your old washers with washers bearing the Energy Star label and having a water factor of at least 9.5 or lower. These washers can save 35-50% of the water used in other models.

For machines that use energy as well, don’t forget the energy part of the picture. Saving energy and water can go hand-in-hand when you make sure that your new appliance is Energy-Star certified.
